Registration of stay (prijava boravka)

A foreigner who stays in Montenegro up to 90 days, or holds a D visa, must register the stay at the place of stay. If you use an accommodation provider, the provider registers you. A foreigner who does not register or deregister is fined EUR 60 to 600.

Who must register

The rule applies to every foreigner who stays up to 90 days (with or without a visa) and to holders of a D visa. Citizens of EU countries do not need to register for stays up to 3 months.

Holders of a temporary or permanent residence permit register only when they stay in another place in Montenegro for more than 3 days.

Deadlines

  • Hotel or other accommodation provider: the provider registers you with the police within 12 hours of arrival. You must give the provider your personal data and your travel document details.
  • A company, an entrepreneur or a person you visit gives you accommodation for more than 12 hours: that host registers you with the police within 12 hours of arrival.
  • You do not use an accommodation provider: you register yourself with the police within 24 hours of arrival at the place of stay.
  • You move to another place in Montenegro for more than 24 hours: register at the new place within 24 hours of arrival there.

Where to register

At the police (Uprava policije) in the place where you stay. The official form asks for your travel document details and the address of your accommodation.

If you stay as a tourist and do not use an accommodation provider, you can register through the local tourist organisation (turistička organizacija), or through the competent local administration body if there is no tourist organisation. This is free of charge. They send the registration to the police electronically within 12 hours of receiving it.

Tourist tax

Each municipality introduces its own tourist tax (boravišna taksa) by its own regulation and sets the amount between EUR 0.10 and EUR 1.00. Children under 12 do not pay. Ages 12 to 18 pay the tax reduced by 50%.

The accommodation provider collects the tax together with the accommodation fee and shows it separately on the bill.

Deregistration

Deregister with the police within the 24 hours before you leave the place of stay. You do not need to deregister if you leave after the period of stay written in your registration has ended.

If the registration does not state how long you stay and you do not deregister, it is valid for 6 months. For a foreigner who stays up to 90 days, it is valid until the end of that stay.
